The white tablecloth was starched, the fried chicken still warm, the potato salad chilled and iced tea the perfect way to cool off on a hot summers' day in the South.

A picnic is one of my favorite activities, too, so I keep picnic kit in the trunk of my car so we can enjoy an impromptu park, lake or beach-side picnic on a moment's notice! (I'm serious, if you sneeze in my car you won't find a Kleenex, but you can certainly find a way to entertain yourself if you have a couple of extra hours on a Saturday!) In my kit you'll find:

A cute tablecloth I've fashioned (no-sew) from oilcloth like this cute one with oranges!

Plastic cutlery, corkscrew and bottle opener

A small bag for trash

Napkins

Candles, candlesticks and matches

Bug spray and

A football, frisbee or cards, then all you need is something yummy to eat! And to make sure the food and drinks stay cold (and you avoid something exciting like e. coli), bring along a groovy cooler like this retro replica you see above!

To round yourself up some cute oilcloth for a picnic blanket, visit your local fabric store, or www.denverfabrics.com, where you can purchase by-the-yard (grab at least 2 yards.) We have lots, but we’re not sweating it … all our favorite girl grads will get the Amy Mac Campus Bag – the perfect size to tote books to class, with pockets inside to hold pens and cell phones and a snap to keep everything cozy. The outside fabric is laminated, so it won’t get funky when your favorite freshman has to set her cute bag on the gooey floor of her Western Civ. class. These bags have been road-tested by students (and were in fact designed by our very cute cousin-in-law Katelyn K. an upcoming junior at U. of Wash.) Tuck a little cash inside one of those pockets and you will be adored forever!

And for the boy grads on the list? Folding canvas chairs that can be tucked under the dorm room bed or into a teeny dorm room closet are great for extra seating when friends come to study (yeah, right). Another great gift that he will love (but his parents might not) is a giant rolling cooler….hey, it’s good for extra seating, too!

The bottom line is, their parents are going to take care of the necessities (laundry detergent, shampoo, closet organizers) so give them something they want and you will be loved by them forever!

There’s a fun new magazine called Blueprint on newsstands. Check out the article on p. 140 about using fabric pieces and scarfs to create no-sew bags. Also, on the Blueprint website, (found at www.marthastewart.com) there is a pattern for a cute dress … looks pretty simple to make for those crafty sewers out there!

Our very first post … how exciting!
